Growth opportunities for screens in homes
Challenge
A tech multinational approached to Plan to help identify new vectors of growth for its display screens division. The scope was wide, the initial guidance being that the opportunities should be developed into highly tangible propositions, preferably with recurring service revenues.
Approach
To address the wide scope, we began by framing the domains of most potential and used trend analysis to generate initial hypotheses to focus the project further. In-home interviews with lead-users, in London and San Francisco uncovered two guiding insights.
The first was that media enthusiasts with large content libraries spread over a number of platforms wanted to unify and display their media. We developed a device proposition that worked alongside existing hardware, enabling people to access and enjoy their media in richer ways. We designed key UX features, and revenue models for three different distribution channels.
The second insight was that more aesthetically orientated people wanted to adjust the ambience of rooms for different occasions, and often felt screens detracted from the atmosphere of a room. We developed a content platform concept that would enable users to shift emotional gears and adapt their spaces, by providing stunning and adaptive ambient media. We designed UX concepts for key features, including a visual blending feature that was integrated into subsequent display products.
Impact
- Trend analysis that helped frame the opportunity space and inspire hypotheses
- Tangible and commercial propositions
- Two software features were shipped in later products
